Who we are
HQZ LLC is a limited liability company organized under the laws of the United States. The company designs, develops, operates, and maintains the technology that underpins the Birr ecosystem — a public, open, and self-custodial financial system targeting Africa and other emerging markets.
HQZ LLC is the legal entity behind the engineering, security, and commercial operations of birr.foundation and the mobile and infrastructure products that connect to it.
What we do
We build infrastructure that lets people send, receive, save, and verify value without depending on intermediaries that capture rent at every step. Our work spans four layers:
- Settlement layer. The BRDPoSChain network — an EVM-compatible Delegated Proof-of-Stake L1 designed for high throughput, fast finality, and low transaction cost.
- Identity layer. The BirrID standard — an on-chain identity issued as an ERC-721 with optional KYC tiers and biometric attestations, used by every other product in the ecosystem.
- Consumer layer. The BirrWallet mobile application, the BirrConnect social and commerce platform, and the BirrPay merchant rails — all self-custodial, all built around BirrID.
- Governance layer. Coordination, public goods funding, and grant programs delivered through the Birr Foundation initiative.
How we operate
HQZ LLC is structured as a small, engineering-first team. We publish protocols with open specifications, run public infrastructure with verifiable state, and ship consumer software that keeps custody of private keys with the user.
We work with regulators, financial institutions, and developers who share the view that open networks produce better outcomes for users than closed, extractive ones. We comply with all applicable laws and design our products so that compliance is a feature, not an afterthought — including optional KYC tiers, sanctions screening, and auditable on-chain trails for institutional partners that require them.
Where we are based
HQZ LLC is registered in the United States. Our team operates remotely across North America and East Africa, with primary operations focused on the Ethiopian and broader East African markets.
